True Cost of Ten Hag Sacking Revealed
Manchester United’s managerial shake-up has proven costly, with the club spending nearly £22 million to replace Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag, dismissed in October following a dismal start to the season, was handed a £10.4-million severance package, which also included payouts for departing staff. The decision came just months after he received a contract extension for leading the team to a Football Association Cup victory.
New coach Ruben Amorim’s acquisition from Sporting Lisbon added £11 million to the bill, covering his release clause, notice period and acquiring his coaching staff.
The high expenses highlight the financial strain caused by managerial turnover at United, with the club having paid out significant sums to dismiss previous managers such as Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
To offset the financial hit, the Red Devils increased ticket prices to £66 per game, and scrapped concessions for children and seniors, sparking backlash from fans. The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust called the move “offensive”, with protests now planned.
Amorim debuted last weekend with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. However, his transfer budget for January will be hamstringed as club management grapples with financial constraints, adding pressure to a team that’s languishing halfway down the English Premier League table.
